New Thai-Malaysian border crossing point opens in Songkhla
SONGKHLA, Jan 20 (TNA) – A new permanent border crossing point linking Thailand’s southern province of Songkhla and Malaysia’s Kota Putra was officially opened on Wednesday.
Songkhla governor Vinyu Thoangsakul together with Dato Raja Azhar Bin Abdul Manap, deputy secretary-general of the Malaysian Home Affairs Ministry, jointly presided at a ceremony to inaugurate the border crossing point in Ban Pra-Kob in Songkhhla’s Na Thawi district.
Thai Deputy Interior Minister Thaworn Senneam and various officials as well as local people also witnessed the event.
The new border crossing poing is aimed at facilitating local people and tourists to travel between the neighbouring countries.
Currently the officials from 11 related agencies have manned and operated the border crossing service from 7am to 5pm on a daily basis.
The temporary office was set up in shipping containers as the permanent centre on the Thai side is under construction and expected to be completed in 2012.
The establishment of the border crossing is part of the Indonesia-Malaysia-Thailand Growth Triangle (IMT-GT) development projects.
The IMT-GT is a subregional cooperation initiative formed in 1993 by the governments of Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand to accelerate economic transformation in less developed provinces. (TNA)
