Thai economy still vulnerable to global economic risk: Bank of Thailand

BANGKOK, Jan 20 (TNA) – The Thai economy remains highly vulnerable to global economic risk although it is set to recover this year, according to the Bank of Thailand (BoT).

Suchart Sakkankosone, senior director of the Bank of Thailand’s Domestic Economy Division, said it needed to be closely monitored whether the Thai economy will recover quickly or slowly and will probably turn to tumble or not.

He said the central bank had never advised how the economy might recover because it remains very uncertain.

BoT believes the Thai economy will slow down again for a certain period if fiscal and monetary measures issued to stimulate the economy during the crisis were lifted.

Thai economic recovery depends on risk factors incurred from the global economic uncertainties, but recovery will not be as strong as previously.

However, Mr Suchart said he believed the Finance Ministry will gradually ease the stringent fiscal policy properly and the central bank would relax monetary policy carefully and in a timely manner by taking into account surrounding factors or the global economic recovery to ensure that the current Thai economic resilience is not affected.
