PRESIDENT WATCHES TNI COMBINED EXERCISE IN E KALIMANTAN
Pantai Sekerat, East Kalimantan, June 16 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono on Monday was at the beach of Sekerat, East Kalimantan, to watch a large-scale combined exercise of the Indonesian National Defense Forces (TNI) from close quarters.
The combined exercise was among others participated in by Marine Corps amphibious units, Air Force Hawk 200, F-16 Fighting Falcon, Sukhoi SU-27Sk, SU-30MK, F-5E Tiger fighter and C-130 Hercules planes.
President Yudhoyono was accompanied by TNI Chief General Djoko Santoso, Army Chief of Staff General Agustadi Sasongko Purnomo, Naval Chief of Staff Admiral Sumardjono, and Air Force Chief of Staff Marshal Subandrio.
The president had come to Sekerat via Balikpapan from Bali where he had among other things officially opened the Bali Cultural Festival.
Earlier, on Sunday (June 15), the president witnessed a war exercise involving 340 Indonesian warships, six helicopters, and five jet fighters.
The TNI's combined exercise which was started June 8, 2008, involved a total of 30,570 personnel from the Army, Air Force and Navy.
Codenamed "Yudha Siaga" (Combat Alert) it was being held in four strategic areas, namely Natuna, Batam (Riau Islands province), Singkawang (West Kalimantan), and Sanggatta (East Kalimantan).
Some 120 bombs and 266 rockets were to be spent in the joint maneuvers the kind of which the TNI had not held since 1996.
