Cabinet discusses more aid to quake-hit Haiti; considers funds and rice

BANGKOK, Jan 19 (TNA) - Thailand's Cabinet is considering Tuesday more aid for quake-hit Haiti, possibly sending funds and rice, after initially giving US$20,000 last week.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is asking the Cabinet Tuesday to approve medium-term financial assistance to Haiti as the Thai law does not allow the ministry itself approve any budget over US$30,000.

The five new ministers and deputy ministers -- Deputy Prime Minister Trairong Suwankiri, Education Minister Chinnaworn Boonyakiat, Public Health Minister Jurin Laksanawisit, Deputy Pubic Health Minister Phansiri Kulnardsiridamrong and Transport Minister Suchart Chokechaiwattanakorn—began their first day on duty by attending the weekly Cabinet meeting.

Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya earlier said that the ministry is consulting with agencies concerned to provide assistance to benefit a spectrum of victims, at the same time, coordinating with the Thai private sector and benefactors to send financial donations there.

He said the ministry had opened a special bank account for public donations to help the Haitian earthquake victims at Krung Thai Bank, Samyod Branch, current account number 002-6-18233-5.

The minister said he has asked the Mexican government to help procure and deliver supplies in need on behalf of the Thai government to affected Haitians with Thailand’s financial assistance.

The Thai foreign ministry reported that there were altogether eight Thais living in Haiti and all were safe after the powerful earthquake hit southern Haiti last Tuesday.

One has left Haiti for Jamaica and is waiting to return to Thailand, while the other three have expressed their intention to return home.

Mr Kasit said that he had given the names, addresses and telephone numbers of the Thais to Mexican Charge d' Affairs Alfonso Ascencio Herrera to provide assistance.

He said Mexico had five planes flying between Mexico and Haiti on daily basis and the Mexican government expressed willingness to help. Once the Thais arrived in Mexico City, the Thai Embassy there will provide assistance including air tickets to return to the kingdom.

Some 50,000 bodies have been collected and 1.5 million homeless estimated so far after the 7.0 magnitude quake hit Haiti last week and flattened much of its capital. There are fears that death toll could reach 200,000, while it is estimated that two million people need urgent food aid. (TNA)
