SIX REGENCIES/CITIES IN W.SUMATRA PRONE TO TECTONIC QUAKES

Padang, June 16 (ANTARA) - Six regencies and cities in West Sumatra province are prone to tectonic quakes and therefore in need of protective anticipation and measures.

The six areas are located along the western coast of West Sumatra, West Sumatra Governor Gamawean Fauzi said in a draft document of West Sumatra's long term development plan (RPJPD), in Padang, on Sunday.

These areas cover Pesisir Selatan, Padang Pariaman, Agam, Pasaman Barat, Mentawai Islands and Padang city.

West Sumatra also has seven regencies/cities prone to volcanic quakes, including Pasaman, Agam, Tanah Datar, Solok, Solok Selatan, Bukittinggi and Padang.

West Sumatra is also prone to tsunamis, covering its entire coastal region, Mentawai Islands and some other smaller islands.

The tsunami-prone areas are mostly flat coastal areas not higher than 10 meters above sea level, he added.

In the meantime, according to data from the National Unity and Community Protection Agency, West Sumatra chapter, some 554,878 people of the province are living in areas highly prone to tsunamis. These areas include Padang, Pariaman, Pesisir Selatan, Padang Pariaman, Agam, Pasaman Barat and Mentawai Islands, head of the alertness division of the National Unity and Community Protection Agency, West Sumatra chapter, Ade Edward said.

He said the greatest number of people living in these tsunami-prone areas are in Padang with 380,402 people, Pesisir Selatan (36,980), Pasaman Barat (29,649), Pariaman (25,029), Padang Pariaman (24,861), Agam (20,644) and Mentawai Islands (17,313).
