Three Thais in Haiti want to come home: Thai Foreign Minister
BANGKOK, Jan 18 (TNA) - Three Thais working in Haiti have expressed their intention to return to Thailand after a powerful earthquake hit southern Haiti on Tuesday, leaving the capital in ruins and killing thousands of people, according to Thai Minister of Foreign Affairs Kasit Piromya.
The three Thais--the wife of UN official and owner of a Thai restaurant, two employees in the restaurant, could leave Haiti immediately, the minister said, adding that he had given the names, addresses and telephone numbers of the Thais to Mexican Charge d' affairs Alfonso Ascencio Herrera to provide assistance.
He said Mexico had five planes flying between Mexico and Haiti on daily basis and te Mexican government expressed willingness to help.
Mr Kasit said that when the Thais arrived in Mexico City, the Thai Embassy there will provide assistance including air tickets to return to Thailand.
As for the emergency aid to Haiti, the minister said that the government had initially agreed to give US$20,000 to Haiti and now the ministry was consulting with agencies concerned to provide assistance to benefit the most of the victims.
He added that the ministry was coordinating with the private sector and benefactors in Thailand to send financial donations to Haiti.
He affirmed that Thailand would try its best to aid Haiti.
He expected Thailand’s relief assistance to Haiti to be channeled through Mexico
He also asked the Mexican government to help procure and deliver supplies in need on behalf of the Thai government to the affected Haitians with Thailand’s financial assistance.
Thani Thongpakdee, Deputy Director General of Department and Foreign Ministry spokesman said the latest information confirmed that there were altogether eight Thais living in Haiti and all were safe. One of them had left Haiti for Jamaica and was waiting to return to Thailand. (TNA)
