Red Shirts submit land encroachment complaint to Privy Council

BANGKOK, Jan 18 (TNA) - Thailand's red-clad anti-government United Front for Democracy Against Dictatorship (UDD) on Monday gathered at the Privy Council Chambers on Sanamchai Road, submitting their letter of complaint over what they branded as double-standard practices regarding the alleged encroachment of forest reserve land by two privy councillors.

The Red Shirt protesters, led by leaders Veera Musikapong and Nattawut Saikua submitted a letter addressed to the Privy Council via the representative of the Office of His Majesty's Principal Private Secretary.

Mr Veera said after the September 19 coup in 2006, double-standards have obviously been applied, not only to politicians but also regarding two privy councillors, causing dissatisfaction among the Thai people.

The UDD leader accused Privy Councillor Gen Surayud Chulanont for having a vacation home in national forest reserve in Khao Yai Thiang in the northeastern province of Nakhon Ratchasima, while Privy Council president Gen Prem Tinsulanonda allegedly supported and protected businessmen who encroached forest reserve land in Chantaburi's Khao Soi Dao and forest reserve in Ratchaburi province.

Both cases have been under investigation by Parliament and complaints have been made, but there is no progress on them, according to the Red Shirt leader.

As citizens with concern about the matter, Mr Veera said, the UDD wants to inform the facts to the Privy Council, reiterating that the movement did not have bias over any particular privy councillor.

Mr Veera said he believes that fair and equal legal enforcement will create a peaceful society, saying that a privy councillor who commits any inappropriate action should take responsibility for his own deed to maintain the privy council's integrity.

Protest leader Nattawut added that the group will disclose Tuesday evidence showing that the land purchase by Gen Surayud at Khao Yai Thiang had not been conducted as earlier claimed.

Although, the Red Shirts dispersed peacefully after submitting the letter, security remains tightened at the Privy Council Office.

UDD members on Sunday filed a police complaint against Gen Surayud and his wife, charging that the couple possessed more than the 21 rai of land in Khao Yai Thiang, more than what they declared to the National Counter Corruption Commission (NCCC) when he took the premiership after the coup.

The attorney-general’s office earlier said it would not sue Gen Surayud as he bought the land legally and it had twice changed ownership before he acquired it.

The Red Shirt protesters nonetheless threatened to resume mass protests at the Forestry Department if the agency does not file suit against Gen Surayud for encroachment of forest land within seven days.

The UDD also said it plans to protest later this month against Gen Prem after accusing him of owning stakes at a golf course and encroaching on the forest reserve in Khao Soi Dao. (TNA)
