Protesters file police complaint against Surayud, wife on alleged forest encroachment

BANGKOK, Jan 17 (TNA) -- Members of the anti-government United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) on Sunday filed police complaint against Privy Councillor Gen. Surayud Chulanont and his wife on their false declaration of land they possessed within the national forest reserve and built a resort house.

UDD members, led by Arisman Pongruangrong, a key member of the group, filed the police complaint with the Crime Suppression Division requesting police action against the couple on possessing land at Khao Yai Thiang in the northeastern province of Nakhon Ratchasima and building their home.

They charged that the couple possessed more than 21 rai of land, more than what they had declared to the National Counter Corruption Commission (NCCC).

Gen. Surayud, a former prime minister installed by the military following the coup of September 2006 toppling the government of prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, earlier notified the NCCC that he owns 21 rai of land in the area.

Mr. Arisman said UDD members plan to march to the privy council office Monday demanding that it states whether it is appropriate for privy councillors to own land at national forest reserves.

The UDD earlier said it plans to protest later this month against Privy Council president Gen. Prem Tinsulanonda after accusing him of owning stakes at a golf course and encroaching on a forest reserve in Khao Soi Dao in the eastern province of Chanthaburi.

Meanwhile, Buranat Samuttharak, spokesman of the ruling Democrat Party, said he believed the UDD will hold more violent demonstrations before the court deliver its verdict on February 26 on the Bt76.6 billion assets formerly owned by Mr Thaksin, his former wife and children. The assets are now frozen by the government.

In addition the UDD will demonstrate against donations amounting to Bt258 million from a private businessman to the Democrat Party earlier, said Mr. Buranat. (TNA)
