Analyst urges Iran-Pakistan-Afghanistan to boost ties

Islamabad, Jan 16, IRNA - Former Secretary-General of Foreign Affairs M. Akram Zaki on Friday urged Iran, Pakistan and Afghanistan to boost ties without any external pressure.

Talking to IRNA, he said that the trilateral forum could be very helpful in resolving the issues of region.

Foreign ministers from Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan will gather in Islamabad on Saturday for a meeting on security, foreign military presence and terrorism. Ministers from the three countries regularly meet to discus Afghanistan and regional security issues.

M. Akram Zaki suggested that during the meeting an effort would be made to formulate common approaches towards issues of the region.

He said that "Pakistan, Afghanistan and Iran must take up their common issues without worrying about what the US wants".

He opined that the three countries can definitely coordinate their activities at trilateral level rather then solving the issues separately at the bilateral level.

“Iran being a major power can play an important role in the meetings”, he believed.

The analyst said that Pakistan government wants to tackle the problem of terrorism with the cooperation of Afghanistan and Iran. He added that stability and peace in the region is in the interest of all the three countries.

M. Akram Zaki said that the problem is that Afghanistan is participating in the meeting under the influence of US. “They should come up with their own agenda instead of some others' agenda”, he opined.

He said that US is very much against the implementation of IP gas pipeline project, but Pakistan should go for the project as early as possible irrespective of any external pressure. "We should promote our relationship with Iran ", he suggested.

Expressing his views on Iran’s nuclear programme the analyst viewed that it is the right of Iran to develop nuclear energy as being the signatory of Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) it can use nuclear energy for peaceful means.

M. Akram Zaki added that west has been criticizing Iran’s nuclear programme only because it would be very difficult for them to see a strong Muslim state as a nuclear power.

Akram Zaki has an outstanding record of distinguished public service as a career diplomat and as a Senator.

During his diplomatic career he served as Pakistan's Ambassador to China, USA, Nigeria , the Philippines and later became the Secretary General for Foreign Affairs./end
