Teachers, students commemorate idealistic teacher killed in 2007 abduction

NARATHIWAT, Jan 15 (TNA) - A school in Narathiwat commemorated an idealistic teacher, who left her native North to teach children in the South and died in 2007 after abducted and beaten by some villagers in this violence-plagued province.

Teachers and students organised activities on Friday to mark Teachers’ Day on January 16. They observed
moment of silence for Ms Juling and delivered a eulogy, who left her murals as a memorial.

An exhibition was held of her work and dedication to teach students in an area where insurgents are active.

Ms Juling was one of two teachers taken hostage at Gujingluepa School in Narathiwat's Rangae district, by villagers who wanted to trade her freedom and that of her teacher colleague for the release of two men
earlier arrested as suspects in the murder of two Thai Marines in 2005.

During her detention in May 2006, she was beaten and remained comatose for eight months before she died on January 8, 2007.

Teacher Isman Muwannasit at Gujingluepa School said all teachers in the southern border provinces faced difficulties working in violence-prone areas.

Teachers are escorted by officials to provide them security when they travel to and back from school in the morning and in the afternoon.

All teachers try to do their best in doing their duties, he said while calling for agencies concerned to provide more welfare and assistance to teachers as they are at risk, travelling to work everyday. (TNA)
