Kyrgyz FM explains rules of obtaining a commercial driver's license in United States

Bishkek, Feb.19, 2026 /Kabar/. Kyrgyz Ministry of Foreign Affairs clarified how to obtain or renew a commercial driver's license (CDL) in the United States.

Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported that the United States has stricter requirements for issuing and renewing CDLs.

According to clarifications from the U.S. Department of Transportation and the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, the right to obtain or renew a CDL is generally reserved for:

  • U.S. citizens;

  • Green Card holders (US lawful permanent residents);

  • Foreign citizens residing in the US on certain work visas.

The ministry also clarified that having an Employment Authorization Document (EAD) and a Social Security Number (SSN) does not guarantee the right to obtain or renew a CDL without the appropriate immigration status recognized by US federal authorities.

Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kyrgyz Republic recommends that citizens must check the requirements with authorized state agencies in advance, monitor the validity of their permits, and take into account possible changes in federal regulations.
