Iraq and Turkey Discuss Enhancing Military and Security Cooperation

Baghdad / NINA /- Iraq’s Ambassador to Ankara, Majid Al-Lajmawi, on Monday discussed military and security cooperation with Turkish Minister of Defense Yasar Guler.
In a statement, the Iraqi Embassy said that the meeting, attended by Iraq’s Military Attaché in Turkey, Major General Khalil Kamal Al-Zubaie, reviewed bilateral relations between the two friendly countries and explored prospects for strengthening joint military and security cooperation, particularly in the areas of border control, counterterrorism, intelligence sharing, as well as training and capacity-building. The cooperation aims to enhance security and stability in border areas and serve the mutual interests of the Republic of Iraq and the Republic of Turkey.
Ambassador Al-Lajmawi noted that Iraq has borne significant burdens and responsibilities on behalf of the international community, especially regarding the transfer of terrorist detainees from Syrian prisons. He stressed that the current phase requires greater international support for Iraq and the assumption of responsibility by countries through the repatriation of their citizens, given the shared security threat posed by this issue.
For his part, Turkish Defense Minister Yasar Guler praised Iraq’s role in transferring terrorist prisoners from Syria, describing the move as an important contribution to strengthening regional security and supporting stability across the region.
