The Majlis: A Prominent Social Component in Saudi Culture

Sakaka, January 04, 2026, SPA -- The Majlis, a traditional gathering place, represents one of the most important social pillars in Saudi society across the Kingdom’s regions. Deeply rooted in the values of generosity and hospitality, it occupies a central position in home design and is often allocated a larger and more prominent space than other parts of the house, reflecting its role in welcoming guests and hosting gatherings.
The Majlis serves as a living school for generations, bringing together young and old in an atmosphere that preserves social heritage and passes down traditions related to hospitality, guest etiquette, and the serving of dates and Saudi coffee. It is also a key venue for family members and friends to meet, exchange stories, and celebrate special occasions, reinforcing bonds of kinship and community.
In Al-Jouf Region, cultural majalis have gained particular prominence for their vibrant intellectual and social activity. These gatherings bring together writers, researchers, and cultural enthusiasts to discuss literary works, historical narratives, folk tales, and social themes.
Mohammed bin Abdullah Al-Fadil, a specialist in this field, explained that the Majlis enjoys strong and sustained attendance from intellectuals and members of the wider community. He noted that the recently launched “Wednesday Majlis” is expected to further enhance cultural interaction, attract young people, and enrich them through literary and intellectual dialogue.
These gatherings also contribute to strengthening social identity by exploring customs and traditions, recounting the history of the region, and highlighting its archaeological and architectural landmarks alongside modern development projects.
Nabati poetry occupies a special place in the cultural Majlis, drawing inspiration from the natural environment of Al-Jouf, including lavender and other aromatic plants, which are often reflected in poetic imagery and themes.
