Foreign Minister: Bahrain’s UN Security Council membership for 2026–2027 conveys a message of peace and cooperation

Manama, Jan. 1 (BNA): Dr. Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani, Minister of Foreign Affairs, said that the Kingdom of Bahrain’s non-permanent membership of the United Nations Security Council for the 2026–2027 term conveys a message of peace, coexistence, solidarity, and shared prosperity to the international community.

He said the membership reflects the Kingdom’s diplomatic and humanitarian approach under the leadership of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa and the directives of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister.

Dr. Al Zayani expressed pride in Bahrain’s official assumption of its non-permanent seat on the Council for a two-year term, marking the Kingdom’s second membership in nearly three decades and reflecting growing international confidence in Bahraini diplomacy.

The minister said Bahrain remains committed to working closely with Security Council members and the wider international community to support peace and stability, address traditional and emerging security challenges, promote inclusiveness and participation, including the empowerment of women and youth, and strengthen effective multilateral action.

Dr. Al Zayani noted that Bahrain’s role, including its representation of Arab League and Organisation of Islamic Cooperation member states, its current presidency of the Gulf Cooperation Council, and its active engagement within the United Nations system, underscores its commitment to multilateral cooperation and the maintenance of international peace and security in line with the UN Charter, international law, and international humanitarian law.

He said Bahrain advocates dialogue and wisdom in conflict resolution, respect for state sovereignty and territorial integrity, non-interference in internal affairs, and the advancement of humanitarian action and sustainable development.

He added that Bahrain places strong emphasis on supporting the Palestinian cause and the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people to establish an independent, sovereign state in accordance with the two-state solution.

He stressed the importance of full adherence to the outcomes of the Sharm El Sheikh Peace Summit, the provisions of the agreement to end the war in the Gaza Strip, the protection of civilians, facilitation of humanitarian aid, and reconstruction efforts, in line with the peace plan proposed by US President Donald Trump, relevant outcomes of the Bahrain Arab Summit and the Extraordinary Palestine Summit, and pertinent UN Security Council resolutions.

The Foreign Minister highlighted Bahrain’s commitment to supporting international and regional efforts to combat terrorism and violent extremism, advance the Royal call for an international treaty criminalising religious and racial hate speech, promote a culture of peace, and address cross-border challenges, including climate change, food security, and cyber security.

He also underlined Bahrain’s role in securing maritime navigation and protecting global energy supplies and trade through hosting the headquarters of the Combined Maritime Forces, as well as its call for a Middle East free of weapons of mass destruction.

Dr. Al Zayani said Bahrain seeks to contribute to the development of the United Nations system to enhance its effectiveness, transparency, and inclusiveness, ensure broader representation of developing countries in decision-making, and strengthen global governance. He highlighted Bahrain’s support for improving the effectiveness of the Security Council in fulfilling its mandate, as well as initiatives proposed by HRH the Crown Prince and Prime Minister to advance international cooperation, including calls for an international treaty to regulate and govern artificial intelligence, promote fairness and inclusivity within global financial and economic institutions, and deepen cooperation to address environmental, climate, health, and economic challenges in support of sustainable development goals and the Pact for the Future.

He said that, under the leadership of His Majesty the King and the directives of HRH the Crown Prince and Prime Minister, and through the collective efforts of Team Bahrain, the Kingdom will continue, through its role on the Security Council, its longstanding diplomatic engagement spanning more than five decades as an active international partner committed to peace and stability, dialogue and coexistence, solidarity, human rights, and sustainable development, in pursuit of a more peaceful, just, and prosperous world.
