Japan provides about $44 million grant to Kyrgyzstan

Bishkek, Dec. 23, 2025. /Kabar/. Japanese government is providing 6.845 billion Japanese yen (approximately $44 million) in grant aid to Kyrgyzstan, according to the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
According to the organization, on December 12, at the Ministry of Finance of the Kyrgyz Republic, Japanese Ambassador to the Kyrgyz Republic Hirano Ryuichi and Kyrgyz Finance Minister Almaz Baketayev signed exchange notes regarding the provision of grant aid to Kyrgyzstan under four grant projects.
The grant agreements were signed between JICA Resident Representative in the Kyrgyz Republic Nishigata Kotaro and Kyrgyz Finance Minister Almaz Baketayev. The signed documents are aimed at implementing key projects in energy, transport infrastructure, healthcare, and human capital development, namely:
Strengthening the capacity of the training center for the operation and maintenance of the Kyrgyz electric grid. The project, valued at 1.535 billion Japanese yen (~10 million US dollars), will improve the skills of technical personnel, introduce energy-saving technologies, and strengthen the country's energy security.
The project to reconstruct the bridge over the Naryn River on the Bishkek-Osh highway aims to strengthen transport connectivity with the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route. 3.19 billion Japanese yen (~20 million US dollars) will be allocated for its implementation.
Improving medical equipment in referral hospitals in the southern regions of Kyrgyzstan. 1.801 billion Japanese yen (~12 million US dollars) will be allocated for these purposes. The project includes equipping the Osh Interregional United Clinical Hospital and the Osh Oncology Center with modern medical equipment.
The Economic and Social Development Program, which includes an allocation of 319 million Japanese yen (~2 million US dollars), focuses on human capital development by providing the Kyrgyz-Japan Human Development Center (KRJC) with modern equipment for ICT education and research.
"The exchange of notes and the signing of these grant agreements demonstrate the strong partnership between Japan and Kyrgyzstan and reflect a shared commitment to promoting sustainable development and strengthening key sectors in the Kyrgyz Republic through ongoing cooperation," the organization noted.
