Bangkok Air Pollution Hits Unhealthy Levels

BANGKOK, Dec 1 (TNA) - Air pollution in Bangkok surged to unhealthy levels on Monday, affecting nearly 50 areas, according to the city's air quality monitoring center.

The high levels of PM2.5 fine particulate matter, which exceeded the national safety standard of 37.5 micrograms per cubic meter (µg/m3), are forecast to remain elevated until Tuesday.

PM2.5 readings across the city ranged from 27.5 to 52.µg/m3, placing 49 areas under an "Orange" health warning—a level deemed to start having impacts on health. The highest concentration was recorded in Sathon district at 52.7µg/m3.

Narong Reungsi, Permanent Secretary of the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA), stated that the poor air quality in Bangkok and its vicinity is likely to continue exceeding the standard until December 2. Air circulation is expected to improve, with pollution levels forecast to decrease between December 3 and 5.

Authorities urged the public to take precautions, including wearing PM2.5-grade face masks when outdoors and limiting strenuous outdoor activities.

They also advised residents, especially those in high-risk groups, to close windows and doors between 5:00 AM and 9:00 AM to prevent particulate matter from entering their homes, and to use air purifiers. -819 (TNA)
