EU Ambassador to Iraq: Due to Climate Change, We are Placing Assistance to Iraq at the Top of Our Priorities

Baghdad / NINA/- The European Union reiterated its commitment to continue supporting Iraq in diversifying its national economy and implementing projects to confront climate change.
EU Ambassador to Iraq Clemens Semmert told the National Iraqi News Agency (NINA) on Monday that the EU had issued a statement congratulating the Iraqi people on conducting the electoral process peacefully. He stressed that “Iraq is a sovereign state, and we do not interfere in the formation of its government in any way.” He added that what is clear is the country’s need for comprehensive economic development, noting that Europe is ready to continue supporting Iraq in this effort.
Semmert explained that the European Union has supported Iraq in the past and will continue to do so, aiming to help the country become a true model of stability in a region marked by ongoing conflicts. He praised the Iraqi government for its success in keeping the country away from regional tensions and strengthening its position as a pillar of stability.
Regarding EU-supported projects in Iraq, the ambassador confirmed that the country is among the five most affected worldwide by climate change, noting that its impacts have already begun to force some residents to relocate. He said these challenges make environmental action an urgent priority, which is why assisting Iraq ranks high on the EU’s agenda.
He added that the EU’s support includes strengthening the environmental legislative framework, helping Iraq diversify its economy away from hydrocarbons by moving toward renewable energies, and supporting the private sector to expand export opportunities beyond oil. He concluded by emphasizing that “supporting the Iraqi people remains a steadfast priority for Europe.”/ End
