Bangkok Prison Chief Transferred Over VIP Treatment for Chinese Inmates

BANGKOK, Nov 21 (TNA) - The commander of Bangkok Remand Prison and over 14 correctional officers have been swiftly transferred following a Ministry of Justice order, pending an investigation into alleged misconduct.

This action came after a Department of Corrections (DOC) raid uncovered evidence that staff were providing extensive, unauthorized privileges to inmates linked to "grey Chinese" criminal networks.

The investigation was prompted by complaints from Thai prisoners, who expressed anger over the undue influence and special treatment certain Chinese detainees held over others. The privileges included regular visits from women described as models, and the ability to hire Thai inmates as personal attendants.

The raid revealed widespread violation of prison rules, with authorities finding a host of contraband and unauthorized amenities. These included prohibited electrical items such as microwave ovens, air conditioning units, and kettles, which were allegedly smuggled into the facility under the pretense of "donations." Additionally, dangerous items like knives and lighters were discovered.

The DOC has confirmed the transfers and has established a disciplinary committee to conduct a full inquiry into the commander and the implicated guards regarding their role in facilitating this luxurious and influential "VIP" status for the Chinese inmates. -819(TNA)
