Hanwha Aerospace partners with GE to locally develop naval gas turbine engine packages

SEOUL, Oct. 21 (Yonhap) -- Hanwha Aerospace Co. said Tuesday it has partnered with GE Aerospace Inc. to jointly develop naval gas turbine engine packages in South Korea, aiming to strengthen its domestic production capabilities.

A memorandum of understanding (MOU) for such cooperation was signed Monday on the sidelines of the Seoul International Aerospace & Defense Exhibition 2025 under way at KINTEX in Goyang, just northwest of Seoul, according to the South Korean firm.

A naval engine package refers to a fully integrated module consisting of a gas turbine engine and key components, allowing for direct installation on ships.

South Korea currently depends heavily on imports for components used in the production of such packages.

Under the agreement, the two companies will locally develop both components and complete engine packages for the LM2500 and LM500 engines. Hanwha said the move is expected to lower costs and significantly shorten delivery times.

The partnership will also help enhance local technological capabilities and contribute to stabilizing the global maritime defense supply chain, Hanwha Aerospace said.

"We plan to secure core technologies for naval engine packages and strengthen our business competitiveness to establish ourselves as a key partner in global maritime security," a Hanwha Aerospace official said.
