Iran rejects Shaheed report as unfair, politically-motivated

New York, Oct 29, IRNA – Iran's Permanent Mission to the United Nations Organization said the recent report by the UN rapporteur on Iran's human rights situation is unfair and politically-motivated. A member of the mission told IRNA the report ignores realities in the Islamic Republic and echoes the political whims of certain countries. Noting that impartiality is the most basic criterion needed for validity of such reports, he said this basic element is lacking in Shaheed's report. The world is witnessing publication of the futile and redundant report at a time when an Iranian delegation is in Geneva to present its second national report on Iran's human rights situation to the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, he added. He also said the anti-Iran report betrays a biased look toward Iran, motivated by certain countries and noted that Iran is well aware of the objectives pursued by such countries. The Iranian diplomat said attempts of this kind simply seek to press the government in Tehran and undermine its constructive and positive role in every single area, adding "Such an approach only gives way to iranophobia and islamophobia." He wondered why a UN rapporteur should meet with Canadian officials or take part in sessions by New York and Ottawa officials in compiling the report instead of going to the Iranian officials in charge of human rights affairs in the country. The member of the mission expressed regret that like before, the rapporteur has gone to terrorist groups and killers of the innocent Iranians or to those who are charged with bombing public places and oil pipelines and even kidnapping instead of relying on reliable information./end
