Value of Iran's handicrafts exports estimated at $300mln per year

Torbat-e Heydariyeh, IRNA – A cultural official has announced that the worth of exports of Iranian-made handicrafts is $300 million a year.

The main destinations for these exports are the Persian Gulf littoral states and Iraq, as reported by Mohamad-Hossein Askarpour, a senior cultural official in charge of supporting the production of handicrafts. He made this announcement during his visit to an exhibition in a city in the northeastern Iranian province of Razavi Khorasan.

Askarpour also said that about 520 thousand Iranian artists are currently active in 299 fields of handicrafts in the country. Furthermore, the government is planning to increase this number in the future.

Iranian handicrafts, including handwoven Persian carpets, are well-known and popular across the world and are considered to be the most precious of their kind.
