NTT Develops Light to Create Illusions
Tokyo, Feb. 15 (Jiji Press)--Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corp. <9432> has developed a special light that adds motion to still images, company officials said Sunday.
Still images, such as photos and paintings, are composed of colors and shapes. The newly developed "protean light" lets the brain connect the colors and shapes and, as a result, creates illusions in which the still images are seen as if they were moving, the officials told Jiji Press.
The white light can be made through computer analyses of photographed still images. When the light with some dark-bright contrast is applied to the objects, optical illusions occur.
In his portraits, great German composer Johann Sebastian Bach always shows a stern look on his face. But with the light, he is smiling, the officials said, adding the light can make people see the wind blowing and the river flowing in a still picture.
NTT thinks the technology can be used for electronic signs and interior decoration, hoping to commercialize it as soon as possible.
Developers of the light also said, "Children will be surprised to see characters in picture books suddenly begin to move."
NTT will show the technology at its research facility on Thursday and Friday.
