Qatar El-Jaish Draw with HSV Hamburg at IHF Super Globe
Doha, August 25 (QNA) - A penalty goal in the final second prevented German side HSV Hamburg from a defeat in their match at the IHF Super Globe in Doha, Qatar. The final result against a highly strong team of El-Jaish from Qatar was 29:29. Best players were El-Jaish goalkeeper Dan Beutler (18 saves) and HS top scorer Stefan Schroder (9 goals).
The Qatar team was clearly backed by the brilliant saves of goalkeeper Dan Beutler, who formerly played for HSV Hamburg until May. Due to his saves - and despite missing their top player Nicolaj Markussen due to an injury - El-Jaish was surprisingly in lead immediately by even four goals at 10:6, before HSV coach Martin Schwalb took his time-out.
His players had understood, but they could not manage to turn the match around in the first half. And the Germans even were hit by the red card against their defence specialist Davor Dominikovic in minute 22. But even without the Croatian World and Olympic champion they reduced the gap - and when Spanish newcomer Joan Canellas hit the net with the halftime whistle, the result was leveled for the first time at 13:13, though El-Jaish top scorer Ahmed Elahmar was unstoppable on the right back position.
Who thought that the more experienced Germans would easily march ahead after the break, was completely wrong. El-Jaish still stood strong, took their chances, as Beutler still saved brilliant. The Qatari team took the lead again at 23:22 in minute 47 - and first match of group A became a real thriller.
El-Jaish energized themselves by counter-attacks goals, leaving Hamburg behind, when entering the last four minutes. 60 seconds before the final whistle the score was 28:28, Schwalb took his final time-out 44 seconds before the end. Bus his team missed again against Beutler - giving El-Jaish their last chance, and Zoran Roganovic netted in for the 29:28 lead. But with the final whistle, HSV received a penalty shot - and Mahe netted in for the finally lucky draw for the Germans.
Martin Schwalb, coach HSV Hamburg: In defence we played too weak and we allowed El-Jaish too many chances. So in the end we won a point. If we want to finish on top of our group, we need to improve. Maybe it is an excuse that my players were tired after two tough Champions League qualification matches in the last days. Aside we miss some injured players - and we have a new team, which must be build-up. So I hope that we can make the next steps here in Doha.
Johannes Bitter, player HSV Hamburg: The match was anything but easy, and we saw that we must grow as a team. But we want to proof that we can win this group.
Sharshani Manssor, coach El-Jaish: We have shown a great match, which unfortunately we lost. We have to stay with the feet on the ground now and be humble - as we now have to focus on the upcoming matches. Maybe we caused too many mistakes to win against Hamburg.
Hassan Rabie, player El-Jaish: We have played brilliantly, but in the end we must concentrate more - then we even can beat big teams, but I believe we can win our group. (QNA)
