New Road to Arab Games' Athletes Village Opened

Doha, November 26 (QNA) - The new road linking Ezdan Village that will accommodate athletes during the 2011 Arab Games, with Doha City was opened on Saturday. The new road will facilitate the transportation of participating athletes in Arab Games from Athletes Village to competitions venues. HE Sheikh Saoud bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani, Secretary General of The Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC) and Chairman of Arab Games Organizing Committee (AGOC), made an inspection visit to the road. HE Sheikh Saoud was accompanied by Eng Nasser Al Mawlawi, Managing Director of Public Works Authority (Ashghal), Ahmad Al-Mawlawi, AGOC Deputy Chairman and Khalid Al-Mohannadi, Executive Director of Arab Games as well as other senior officials in the Arab Games and Media Representatives. The new 11 km long road links athletes village in Al-Wakrah with Waqoud Roundabout in Abu Hamour Area and facilitates the transportation of athletes between athletes village and competitions venues. The newly-opened road will also serve residents of Al-Wakrah and Al-Wikair areas as the road will be open for public not for athletes only. Sheikh Saoud bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani stressed that the new road will serve residents of Al-Wakra Area. AGOC Chairman extended his appreciation to Eng Nasser Al Mawlawi and other officials of Public Works Authority (Ashghal) for their commendable efforts to finish the road before the Arab Games. QOC Secretary General also thanked Hamad Al-Tamimi, Director of Arab Games Services Department, and all those who have contributed to completion of such road that shortens the distance between Al-Wakrah and Waqoud Roundabout to only 10 minutes only. AGOC Chairman said that the AGOC received a letter from Mr. Uthman Al-Saad, Secretary General of Union of Arab National Olympic Committee stating that Syrian athletes will not participate in Arab Games and added that this apology will not affect Arab Games, especially since such issues are normal in Major Sporting events. HE Sheikh Saoud bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani announced that the QOC will establish new playground in Al-Wikair Area to serve the residents of this area. (QNA)
