2010 WORLD BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIP TO CONTRIBUTE 300 MILLION TL TO TURKISH ECONOMY

ISTANBUL (A.A) - 23.08.2010 - Turkey which is getting ready to host the 2010 World Basketball Championship is expected to generate 300 million TL in revenues during the tournament.
According to Turkcell,the main sponsor of the tournament which will run through August 28-September 12, the championship is expected to contribute a total of 300 million TL (159.5 million Euro) to the Turkish economy, through spending on items like accommodation, transportation, tournament tickets, events, sponsorships, advertisements as well as revenues from investments on facilities, and operational spending.
All hotels in Istanbul, Izmir, Kayseri, and Ankara where the games will be played, were fully booked. 30,000 people made reservations only in Istanbul.
A total of 100,000 visitors are expected to follow the games between 24 national basketball teams in four cities. Teams, players, sponsor companies, the press and spectators represent a $44 million accommodation economy. Only the accommodation of the U.S. National team represent a 1 Million Euro spending. Tourists and teams are expected to spend 15 million Euro on social expenses.
The tournament is expected to attract 200 thousand spectators, with 80 percent of the tickets already sold.
The sponsors are contributing 5 million Euro to the championship.
Turkey spent 80 million Euro on sports arenas and other facilities and 15 million Euro on the organization of the Championship.
