Siriraj Hospital first operate robotic knee surgery in SEA

BANGKOK, July 7 (TNA) - Government-run Siriraj Hospital in Bangkok has now become the first hospital in Southeast Asia which has successfully operate a robotic surgery for patients with partial knee-joint problems. The success was announced by Dr. Udom Kachintorn, Dean of the Faculty of medicine at Siriraj Hospital under Thailand's renowned Mahidol University on Friday. Dr. Udom said that the Thai surgical innovation has resulted in great accuracy and allowed patients to recuperate faster, within the first day of the surgery, they can even sit and walk, thanks to a very small surgical wound. Associated Professor Dr. Keerati Charoencholvanich, who works for Siriraj Hospital's medical school, told journalists that the surgical robot comprises a set of mechanical arms and a 3D camera which work with a coordinated processor, acknowledging that the robotic surgical innovation allows patients to bend their knees up to 120-130 degrees, a range which is very close to that of healthy people, although the new surgical technique is now useful for only patients with partial knee-joint problems. Marking the 48th anniversary of its establishment, the Orthopaedic Surgery Department of Siriraj Hospital's medical school will offer the robotic surgery for 48 patients with partial knee-joint problems at a special discount.
