TURKISH PRESIDENT RECEIVES HONORARY DOCTORATE FROM SOUTH KOREA
SEOUL (A.A) - 15.06.2010 - The Turkish president received on Tuesday an honorary doctorate from a South Korean university.
South Korea's Hankuk University decorated Turkey's President Abdullah Gul with an honorary doctorate for his active role in international affairs and contributions to Turkey-South Korea relations.
"Turkey is proceeding to become one of leading global actors in the world, with its economy ranked the 16th in the world and 6th in Europe, with its nearly 1 trillion USD Gross National Product (GNP), emerging market and young population," Gul said during the ceremony at the university.
Gul is paying a four-day formal visit to the South Korean capital of Seoul. President Gul said Turkey was broadening its horizons to the East, South Asia, Africa, Latin America and Pacific countries.
Gul said today's multi-polar world order required more and efficient cooperation, dialogue and integration, and global economy management and international finance organizations urgently needed reforms.
Turkey and South Korea were leading countries in their regions in improving human rights, democracy, rule of law, social justice and fundamental freedoms, Gul also said.
President Gul also had a meeting with Park Hee-tae, the speaker of South Korea's National Assembly.
Gul arrived in South Korea early on Monday, becoming the first Turkish president visiting this country in 28 years.
Gul met Hyundai Motor Co. Chairman Chung Mong-Koo on Monday, and he was welcomed by South Korean President Lee Myung-bak formally on Tuesday. Gul also attended Turkey-South Korea Business Forum.
On the sidelines of Gul's visit, Turkey and south Korea signed a memorandum of understanding on cooperation in nuclear energy, agreements on cooperation and assistance in customs, and on cultural exchange program between 2010 and 2012.
Turkey's MTA (General Directorate of Mineral Research & Exploration) and South Korean KIGAM also signed a cooperation agreement.
