Turkish deputy premier says 1,083 Turkish nationals were brought to Turkey from Libya
ANKARA (A.A) - 22.02.2011 - Turkish State Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Cemil Cicek said on Tuesday that 1,083 Turkish nationals had been brought back to Turkey from Libya so far.
Replying to questions on evacuation of Turkish people from Libya, Cicek said, "1,083 Turkish nationals have been brought to Turkey so far."
Turkey will send two more ships for evacuation of Turkish nationals in Libya, which has seen a violent crackdown on anti-government protesters demanding ouster of the Libyan leader. Turkey earlier sent two ferries to Libya.
There were around 25,000 Turkish citizens in Libya, officials said.
Turkey's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has launched several initiatives for safety of Turkish citizens in Libya and their evacuation as unrest swept the north African country.
Hundreds of people have been killed in Libya since protests broke out across the North African nation a week ago. In the capital, Tripoli, and cities of Benghazi, Bayda and Tobruk, people took to the streets to demonstrate against Muammar Gaddafi's 42-year reign.
