Turkish Cypriot president rejects Greek Cypriot proposal for joint census

LEFKOSA (A.A) - 23.03.2011 - Turkish Cypriot President Dervis Eroglu has ruled out joint and simultaneous census in Turkish and Greek parts of the divided Mediterranean island, a proposal made by the Greek Cypriot leader, saying the Turkish Cypriots would hold its own census.
"This is a proposal which we cannot accept. We are a separate state and a separate administration on our own," Eroglu told reporters Wednesday following a meeting with Greek Cypriot leader Demetris Christofias under UN-brokered settlement talks.
Eroglu said the government in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) already planned a census that would conform to international standards.
"It has become a need for us to know the population figures to work according to a program," Eroglu said.
The Greek Cypriot administration is high likely to hold a census on October 1, the Greek Cypriot daily Politis has reported.
The Greek Cypriot side is insistent on a census in the TRNC to find out how many Turkish Cypriot citizens of Turkish origin lives in the northern part of the island.
