Turkish Cypriot president calls on labor unions, political parties & public to try to ease tension
LEFKOSA (A.A) - 14.02.2011 - The president of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) has called on labor unions, political parties and the public to display a calming stance in order to ease the tension in the country.
Speaking to reporters in Lefkosa, TRNC President Dervis Eroglu said governments might be faced with economic crises from time to time.
"Crises cannot be ended without taking measures. Governments that do not take measures will be risking their rulership," he said.
Noting that TRNC had been struggling with an economic crisis since 2007, Eroglu said the government had a program to overcome the current problems.
The president noted that reactions had arisen in TRNC as a result of the government's recent draft law regarding the retired and changes in Value Added Tax (VAT).
"As the country's president, I am aware that it is my responsibility to ensure unity," said Eroglu, adding that he was obliged to bring together political parties and try to find a joint solution.
"Tension will ease in the upcoming days if parties act more calmly and the government works on some measures in cooperation with certain associations," he said.
"The important thing is to implement the necessary measures in time and in a way that will not cause social explosions," the president added.
