Turkish Cypriot lawmaker says anti-Turkey protests cannot cause rupture in ties with Turkey
ANKARA (A.A) - 23.02.2011 - Head of a Turkish Cypriot parliamentary delegation, who visited Turkish counterparts in Ankara, said Wednesday that anti-Turkey protests in the north of the island would not be able to break ties with Turkey, which she said was of vital importance for the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, or TRNC.
Serife Unverdi, chairperson of Turkish Cypriot Parliamentary Committee on Law and Political Affairs, paid a visit to Turkey-TRNC Parliamentary Friendship Committee Chairman Zekeriya Aslan.
Speaking at the meeting, Aslan said that Turkey felt sorry over anti-Turkey protests held in the island on January 28. Aslan said a new rally was planned for March 2 and urged Turkish Cypriot authorities to take necessary measures to avoid such incidents.
In a demonstration to protest austerity measures on January 28, a group of Turkish Cypriots, which the Turkish government believes have links to Greek Cyprus, chanted anti-Turkey slogans, asking the Turkish government not to interfere in their affairs. "Ankara, we don't want your money or [austerity] package," protesters wrote on banners.
Turkish government lashed out at protesters after the rally.
Serife Unverdi said Turkish Cypriot people had been set free by the help of Turkey, adding relations between the countries were based on fraternity, not interests.
"A bunch of banners displayed by a very small group at that rally cannot separate us from the mainland. We will fight the Greek Cypriot mindset. Turkey is of vital importance for us," she said.
