TURKEY-EU: There are circles who want to place obstacles on Turkey's EU process, Bagis says
ANKARA (A.A) - 01.02.2011 - Turkish State Minister and Chief Negotiator for European Union (EU) talks Egemen Bagis said on Monday that there were circles who wanted to place obstacles on Turkey's EU process.
Speaking at a dinner he hosted for members of the Association of Diplomatic Correspondents (DMD) in Ankara, Bagis said that "Turkey will not be the party to pull the plug or throw in the towel vis-a-vis the EU process. We are determined to walk on the path that we began in 1959".
Touching on EU's visa requirement from Turkish citizens, Egemen Bagis said that he was deeply unhappy to see that the Turkish citizens had to apply for visas to enter the EU while citizens of various countries, such as Paraguay and Uruguay, could enter the Union's Schengen region without visas.
Turkey has five clear demands from the EU. Turkey wishes a just negotiations process. Turkey wants visa liberalization with the EU. Turkey wishes cooperation with the EU against terror. Turkey wants the issue of Cyprus not to affect Turkey's EU process. And, Turkey wants to be invited to all EU summits, Bagis said.
