-Transportation ministers discuss joint railway project

TBILISI (A.A) - 26.01.2011 - Transportation ministers of Turkey, Azerbaijan and Georgia met in Tbilisi, Georgia on Wednesday to discuss a joint railway project.
Turkey's Transportation Minister Binali Yildirim underlined importance of the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars (BTK) railway project for the three countries and the region, and said the three countries were working on the project.
"This project is one connecting the East to the West, and one of the 100 giant projects in the world," Yildirim said.
Yildirim defined the project as the contemporary silk road, and a railway linking civilizations.
Moreover, Georgia's Minister for Regional Development & Infrastructure Ramaz Nikolaishvili said he was sure Turkey, Georgia and Azerbaijan would accomplish the project.
Also, Azerbaijani Minister of Transport Ziya Mammadov said his country provided 200 million USD of loan to Georgia with 25-year maturity and 1 percent annual interest for construction of the railway in Georgia.
Mammadov said his country would grant 100 million USD more loan to Georgia this year.
As part of his visit to Georgia, Yildirim met President Mikhail Saakashvili and Prime Minister Nikolaz Gilauri.
Yildirim is expected to depart from the Georgian capital of Tbilisi later on Wednesday.
Speaking to AA correspondent after his meeting with Mammadov and Nikolaishvili, Yildirim said that Turkey had completed 53 percent of the part of BTK project within its territories.
Yildirim said the main problem in the project was the rail and train dimensions in Azerbaijan and Georgia, which were in former Soviet Union standards.
"We debated this issue in our meeting, as their rail and train standards do not abide by ours," Yildirim said.
Yildirim said this problem would be solved by changing ignition plugs and cars.
