Top official: All conditions created to ensure decent detention conditions in Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan, Baku, April 27 / Trend M. Aliyev / Azerbaijan has every condition to ensure decent detention conditions for prisoners in penal facilities, Head of the Department on Work with Law-Enforcement Agencies of the Azerbaijani Presidential Administration Fuad Alasgarov told media today. "Reforms in the penal system are continuing," he said. "There are conditions for decent detention conditions for prisoners. New corrective labor colonies are being built. There was a form of punishment in the Azerbaijani Criminal Code restricting freedom. But this type of punishment was abolished and replaced by another one in accordance with the parliamnetary law." "Azerbaijan uses European penitentiary experience in its legislation," he added. "Now the parliament is considering a bill to protect the rights of people held in custody," he noted. "The European experience has been also used there. The bill will be soon considered at the last reading." "The reforms have been conducted in the judicial sphere in Azerbaijan for many years," he said. "This process is dynamic, because reforms are always required." "One of the components of the reforms is associated with the rejuvenation of staff of the judicial system," he added.
