Swedish foreign minister says Turkey would strengthen EU
STOCKHOLM (A.A) - 16.02.2011 - Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt said on Wednesday that Turkey's EU membership would strengthen the Union.
Delivering a speech at a session on foreign politics at the Parliament of Sweden, Bildt said that Turkey had been exerting great efforts on its EU path. When Turkey fulfilled all preconditions and became a member of the EU, it would strengthen both Turkey and also EU, Bildt said.
There has been a great improvement in democratization in Turkey, he said. Works were under way on a constitutional reform focusing on human rights and these works would probably be speeded up after parliamentary election set to be held in summer in Turkey, Swedish foreign minister said.
If an agreement was reached in Cyprus, it would contribute to stability in East Mediterranean, Bildt said.
