Qashqavi calls on Afghans to remain committed to Hirmand treaty
Tehran, Jan 26, IRNA - Foreign Ministry spokesman Hassan Qashqavi here on Sunday sharply criticized the reduction in the flow of water of Hirmand River and urged the Afghan government to remain committed to the pledges it made in Treaty 1351.
According to the Information and Press Bureau of the Ministry of
Foreign Affairs, Qashqavi was responding to questions about the
problems created for the people in the region who have suffered as a
result of the decline in the flow of water from Hirmand River in the
past seven months.
The Iranian Foreign Ministry, he said, has taken necessary steps to
pursue the case with Afghan officials.
An Iranian delegation in a meeting in Kabul last month lodged a strong
protest over the incident and urged the Afghan government to respect
the provisions of Treaty 1351, Qashqavi said.
Iran is seriously pursuing the case to safeguard national interests, he said.
