Parliaments' role is not to write history, says French deputy Diefenbacher

PARIS (A.A) - December 22, 2011 - The French Parliament on Thursday continues to debate a resolution that criminalizes the rejection of Armenian allegations pertaining to the incidents of 1915.
Speaking at the general assembly of the French Parliament, the chairperson of the French-Turkish Inter-parliamentary Friendship Group Michel Diefenbacher said that "the parliaments' role was not to write history".
"I will vote against the resolution," Diefenbacher underlined.
A member of the ruling Union for a Popular Movement (UMP), Diefenbacher stressed that the Armenian resolution was against the French Constitution.
This resolution will harm the Armenians, Diefenbacher noted.
The French Parliament has 577 deputies. Around 50 deputies are present at Thursday's session.
If adopted on Thursday, the resolution will make it a crime to deny the Armenian allegations on the incidents of 1915 and punish individuals with a prison sentence of 1 year and a monetary fine of 45,000 euros.
