NATO Secretary General: Syrian crisis may be resolved by political reforms

Azerbaijan, Baku, Feb. 17 / Trend A. Taghiyeva / The Syrian crisis may be resolved through political reforms, the satisfaction of the democratic demands of people, NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said in an interview with TRT Haber TV channel. "None of the current leaders can ignore the demands of people," Rasmussen said. He said that the situation in Syria and Libya is incomparable. If the NATO military intervention in the Libyan crisis was supported by the countries in the region and upon the UN Security Council's decision, there are no such support and claim in the situation with Syria, he said. Anti-government protests, which began in mid-March, continue in Syria for already eleven months. Daily reports are received about death of people - both civilians and security forces. According to the UN statistics, the total number of victims in the country exceeds 5,000 people. The Syrian authorities accuse armed militants of the clashes, who receive assistance from neighboring countries. Russia and China blocked the adoption of the resolution on Syria in the UN Security Council last Saturday, using the veto. Moscow and Beijing fear a repeated "Libyan scenario" - the external military intervention. Do you have any feedback? Contact our journalist at agency@trend.az
