Myanmar President confirmed to visit Thailand June 4-5

BANGKOK, May 29 (TN A) - The government has confirmed that Myanmar President Thein Sein will visit Thailand from June 4-5 to discuss various areas of bilateral cooperation and preparation for Myanmar to take the role of the chair of the 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in 2014. Deputy Government Spokesman Anusorn Iamsa-ard told journalists Tuesday that the Myanmar President has postponed his visit to Thailand from June 1 to June 4-5, during which authorities of both countries will discuss bilateral cooperation for the development of Myanmar and mutual interest. According to the spokesman, Thailand and neighbouring Myanmar are drafting a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for their bilateral cooperation, focused on human resource development and preparation for Myanmar to become the ASEAN chair in 2014. Anusorn said that, during Thein Sein's two-day trip to Thailand, both countries'leaders will also discuss economic development, the establishment of sustainable development-learning centers along their border, facilities to serve victims of human trafficking and joint anti-narcotic efforts. Besides, the Thai and Myanmar leaders will discuss a road project to link Thailand, Myanmar and India, a road project from Thailand’s Singkorn border pass to Myanmar's Mergui city and another project to build the second bridge across the Moei River. In another development, Myanmar opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi is confirmed to arrive in Thailand tonight to attend the World Economic Forum (WEF) on East Asia in Bangkok from May 31-June 1. Suu Kyi will first visit Myanmar workers in Thailand's central Samut Sakhon Province Wednesday. There are about 210,000 registered Myanmar workers and about 100,000 non-registered Myanmar workers in Samut Sakhon, most of them are fishing boats' crew, laborers at fishery-related factories, agricultural workers and employees at furniture manufacturers.
