MP Chinburen takes part in IPU meeting at UN High-Level Meeting on HIV/AIDS
Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/. On June 8, 2021, Mr. J.Chinburen, member of the parliament, represented the State Great Hural (Parliament) of Mongolia at the IPU’s virtual meeting of parliaments, organized as a side meeting to the United Nations High-Level meeting on HIV/AIDS.
The meeting was held under the theme of “The role of parliaments in addressing inequalities to end AIDS by 2030”. More than 120 participants shared common challenges and experiences in the fight against AIDS/HIV. Furthermore, parliaments discussed the need for innovative actions and the role parliaments play in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals in the fight against AIDS.
In his speech, Mr. J.Chinburen, MP noted “The COVID-19 pandemic has introduced unforeseen challenges, strained our public health systems, and deepened inequality and pressing issues key persons are already facing, such as the financing of adequate care and interventions, violence and discrimination and the need for legislation and formal mechanisms.” He further elaborated the need for discussion within the international community on the effects of the pandemic on the health of people living with HIV/AIDS. Research is currently being conducted on the intersection of COVID-19 and HIV/AIDS.
Mr.J.Chinburen, MP further explained that “to prevent immune systems from being further compromised and already strained health care systems to be well-above operational capacities, there is a need for the international community to collectively support inoculation in high-prevalence countries. At a time of growing inequality, the continued support of the international community is essential to the implementation of international strategies to improve public services for target populations and to increase attention to matters such as funding.”
Negative attitudes, such as discrimination against people living with HIV/AIDS, gender inequality, and restrictions on access to health, education, and other necessary services, are contributing to the spread of the disease. Therefore, participants noted the importance of effective parliamentary participation and support in ensuring human rights, increasing investment in the health sector, and improving the effectiveness of legislation in response to HIV/AIDS.
