Iraq may become Azerbaijan’s window to Arab world

Azerbaijan, Baku, Jan.20 / Trend A.Taghiyeva / Iraq may become Azerbaijan's window to the Arab world in spreading the truth about the Nagorno-Karabakh problem, chairman of the Iraqi parliamentary Committee on Foreign Relations Humam Hamoody told Trend in an exclusive interview. "I have offered Iraq's help in spreading objective information on the Nagorno-Karabakh problem in the Arab world since these countries have a lot in common," Mr Hamoody said. He said Arab countries have always supported Azerbaijan in the Nagorno-Karabakh problem. This support accounts for several reasons. First of all, the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict is the problem of the Muslim population, secondly, it is a humanitarian problem and thirdly, Arabs also faced similar problems such as problem of Palestine, the Iraqi MP said. The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. Armenian armed forces have occupied 20 per cent of Azerbaijan since 1992, including the Nagorno- Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts. Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group - Russia, France, and the U.S. - are currently holding the peace negotiations. Armenia has not yet implemented the U.N. Security Council's four resolutions on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding regions. Do you have any feedback?
