Iran not to retreat from its rights in Caspian Sea status

Azerbaijan, Baku, Jan. 26 / Trend T. Jafarov /
The principle of justice must be preserved while determining the legal status of the Caspian Sea. Iran will not retreat from its rights in this issue, the Iranian president's special representative for the Caspian issues Mohammad Mehdi Akhundzadeh has recently reported at a conference on the Caspian Sea in the province of Gulustan, İRNA said.
Mr Akhundzadeh said that at present, Iran is preparing a document aimed at protecting its rights in the division of the Caspian Sea.
He said that Iran will not give any reason for conflict between the Caspian littoral countries. All Caspian littoral countries must show solidarity on the issue of the legal status of the Caspian Sea.
The littoral states (Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Russia, Turkmenistan and Iran) signed the Framework Convention for the Protection of the Marine Environment of the Caspian Sea in November 2003.
In July 1998, Russia and Kazakhstan signed an agreement on the delimitation of the northern part of the Caspian Sea in order to exercise sovereign rights for subsoil use.
On Nov. 29, 2001 and Feb. 27, 2003, Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan signed an agreement on the delimitation of the Caspian Sea.
Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan and Russia signed an agreement on the delimitation of adjacent sections of the Caspian Sea on May 14, 2003.
