GUAM permanent representatives to UN hold briefing

Azerbaijan, Baku, April 13 / Trend / The permanent representatives of the Organization for Democracy and Economic Development - GUAM to the UN held a briefing on the 35th item of the agenda of the 66th UN General Assembly session on "Protracted conflicts in the GUAM area and their consequences for international peace, security and development" on Thursday. The briefing was attended by diplomats and media representatives, Azerbaijan's Permanent Mission to the UN said in its press release. During the briefing Azerbaijan's Permanent Representative to the UN Agshin Mehdiyev provided detailed information about the history of the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict, the occupation of Azerbaijani territories by Armenia, heavy consequences of this conflict for Azerbaijan and the country's position on the conflict. Mehdiyev stressed that Azerbaijan is the most interested party in resolving the conflict in the short period of time by negotiations and elimination of its consequences. He stressed that Azerbaijan remains committed to the negotiation process within the OSCE Minsk Group, but will never accept decisions based on the legalization of the status quo, Azerbaijan's territorial integrity is not and will never be the subject of compromise. Mehdiyev also mentioned that there is no alternative to resolution of conflicts within respect for state sovereignty, territorial integrity of countries and internationally recognized borders. Unfortunately, Armenian political leadership does not realize that their destructive and dangerous policy has no perspective. The Permanent Representative stressed that the conflicts in the GUAM countries must worry also the international community. Therefore, GUAM will continue its efforts to settle conflicts based on generally accepted international norms and principles of international law. During their speeches, Georgian Permanent Representative dwelled on the conflict in South Ossetia and Abkhazia, Moldovan Permanent Representative on the Transnistrian conflict, Ukrainen Permanent Representative dedicated his speech to partnership within GUAM.
