Extremism and discrimination are important threats, Turkish foreign minister says
ISTANBUL (A.A) - 11.05.2011 - Turkey's foreign minister Wednesday warned that extremism and discrimination were escalating in Europe.
Speaking at the opening of the 121st meeting of Council of Europe (COE) Ministers Committee in Istanbul, Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu referred to the report prepared by Committee of Eminent Persons and noted that the report dealt with very important and sensitive matters.
"All of us have to be in solidarity on our common values in Europe's level," Davutoglu said noting that there was not a contradiction between the identity and integrity and that everybody could have multiple identities.
Davutoglu said European identity was comprised of multiple identities and democracy, human rights and supremacy of law were among them.
"Everybody is of the same opinion that xenophobia and populist parties are on the rise. Extremism and discrimination are important threats for our societies today," Davutoglu said underlining that the threats affected all the countries and that nobody was exempt from those threats.
Davutoglu said migration was an element for economic and social developments, however that difference between political extremism and populism should be known.
Davutoglu asked all the parties to contribute to examination of recommendatory decision in the report.
