Azerbaijan issue call to prevent pollution of Caspian Sea from land based sources

Azerbaijan, Baku, Oct. 31/ Trend M. Aliyev / Today, protection of the Caspian Sea from pollution from land based sources and rivers flowing into it, is the most important issue, the head of the Department of Environmental and Conservation Policy at the Azerbaijani Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources Rasim Sattarzadeh stated during a multimedia videoconference Baku-Moscow-Astana dedicated to the 19th Anniversary of the Tehran Framework Convention for the Protection of Marine Environment of the Caspian Sea. Sattarzadeh noted that Azerbaijan has conducted extensive work on the modernisation of existing and construction of new sewage treatment plants along the Caspian coast. "In addition, construction of a new wastewater treatment plant is underway in Sumgayit. Treatment facilities will be set up in all parts of the country as a result of this work, "Sattarzadeh said. The department head said the main purpose of the Tehran Convention is to reduce the pollution of the Caspian Sea, to take measures on protection of the sea from pollution caused by vessels, to protect its biodiversity and to jointly monitor the sea. According to him, hydrocarbon production is not the main cause of pollution of the Caspian Sea. "Oil has to be produced, but the risks have to be reduced through use of modern technologies and methods of control," Sattarzadeh stated. Do you have any feedback?
