Agency to be established to consider single alphabet for Turkic-speaking countries

Azerbaijan, Baku, Aug. 28 / Trend I. Isabalayeva /
It is planned to establish an agency with specialists under the ministries of education and the Cabinet of Ministers of Turkic-speaking countries to create a single alphabet of Turkic-speaking peoples.
The issue of creating a single alphabet must be considered by the countries, chairman of the cultural committee of the Azerbaijani Parliament Nizami Jafarov told Trend today.
The group will have to make a concrete decision on a single alphabet, then it must be submitted to the governments for approval, Jafarov said.
He added that the issue was discussed at the meetings of Turkic peoples and the Parliamentary Assembly of Turkic-speaking countries (TurkPA). However, if no management of a Turkic country is interested in this issue, the specialists will fail to work to create a single alphabet.
The linguist stressed that today sound "q" in Turkish Turkic and Azerbaijani languages is written differently.
"Turks write sound "q" as "g", but we as "kü"," he said. "Turkish Turks write "ğ" as "g". Sound "Ə" also differs. We have such a letter, as opposed to them. Turkish Turks must also adopt "ə"."
At present, Turks in Azerbaijan, Turkey and Uzbekistan use the Latin alphabet, while other Turkic peoples do not. If the Uzbeks, Kyrgyz and Turkmen adopt this alphabet with different signs, then they will have problems with the integration into Turkic culture, Jafarov said.
When adopting a single Turkic alphabet, a model alphabet may be presented to these peoples.
