ABOUT MEETING WITH UN HUMAN RIGHTS HIGH COMMISSIONER

Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ The Foreign Minister L.Bold held Tuesday a meeting with Ms Navi Pillay, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights. Mr Bold affirmed that one of the primary principles of his country's foreign policy is to support actions of the UN and its specialized organizations in strengthening the democracy, ensuring and protecting human rights and freedom. He said Mongolia has put forward specific goals in order to be elected as a member of the Human Rights Council in 2016-2018 and to contribute to protecting the human rights at regional and international levels. The Minister noted that the President Ts.Elbegdorj put in 2010 a moratorium on the capital punishment, and that the State Great Khural of Mongolia ratified last year the Second Optional Protocol to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, aiming at the abolition of the death penalty. Mongolia is making its efforts to realize recommendations issued in conjunction with the national report on human rights situation. Saying that the UN Special Rapporteur on extreme poverty and human rights Ms Magdalena Sepulveda visited Mongolia, the Foreign Minister expressed a readiness to receive the UN Special Rapporteur on human rights. Then, on behalf of his government Mr Bold thanked the UNHR High Commission for support. In turn, Ms Pillay congratulated Mongolia on gaining big achievements in protection and ensuring of human rights, strengthening and expanding democracy, and wished Mongolia to be elected member of the Human Rights Council.
