117 killed in Syria in one day

Azerbaijan, Baku, Aug. 2 / Trend A.Taghiyeva /
Clashes between the Free Syrian army and government troops resulted in killing of at least 117 people, Al Arabiya TV channel reported on Thursday.
Among the dead are women and children. Most of the victims are residents of the cities of Damascus, Aleppo and Daraa. It is noted that for the first time during the 16 months of revolution the clashes took place in the neighborhoods of Bab Tuma and Bab Sharqi of Damascus, where Christians live.
Anti-government protests have continued in Syria for more than a year.
They turned into an armed struggle between the opposition and units of the power structures of the country. Reports about new armed incidents and victims appear on a regular basis. This is despite the country having declared a truce since mid-April according to UN-Arab League special envoy to Syria Kofi Annan's plan.
According to UN, the total number of victims of the conflict in Syria has exceeded 17,000 people. About 230,000 people became refugees. About one million people is in need of humanitarian assistance. The Syrian authorities say that they oppose the well-armed militants.
