‘Thaksin’ Believes Royal Pardon Decree Not Benefit Him Alone
BANGKOK, November 20 (TNA) - Ousted and fugitive prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra has sent his handwritten letter saying he believes a royal pardon decree sought by the coalition government under his younger sister Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra would not benefit a particular person.
The letter written by Thaksin from his self-imposed exile residence in Dubai was dated Sunday and distributed by Noppadon Pattama, a legal adviser to the Shinawatra family, said he wished the Thais and the country would overcome the current flooding problem as soon as possible.
Thaksin said the country now needs a unity and reconciliation in order to overcome the natural disaster and that he supports every measure which would bring about the reconciliation.
He said he is willing to sacrifice his happiness although he receives injustice for more than five years.
On reports that the government would seek a royal pardon decree on the occasion of 84th birthday of His Majesty the King which falls on this December 5, Thaksin said he is confident that the endeavour would not benefit him or a single person alone. The King is still sick and we should refrain from disheartening him.
Deposed by a military coup in Sept 2006, Thaksin now lives in exile abroad, mostly in Dubai, after evading a two-year jail term for violating a law on conflict of interest regarding a controversial Bangkok purchase of a prime land.
Thailand's Criminal Court also issued an arrest warrant for him on terrorism charges for being behind and funding the violent actions of the Red Shirts which led to grenade attacks and arsons in the Thai capital and upcountry during the March-May, 2010 demonstrations.
Thaksin concluded in his letter saying that people who love their country should learn on how to “forgive and forget” so that the nation could enter a new dawn. (TNA)
