‘Georgian Dream’ wins elections in Adjara with big margin

Following the full counting of votes, Bidzina Ivanishvili's "Georgian Dream" bloc won 57.6 percent of votes in the elections to the Supreme Council of Adjara. The "United National Movement" with 37 percent of the votes became second, a representative of the Central Election Commission of Georgia said.
Elections to the Supreme Council of Adjara were held along with the parliamentary elections in Georgia on Oct.1. Some 21 MPs will be included in the Supreme Council of Adjaran Autonomy. Six of them are MPs elected on the majoritarian system, the other 15 - on party lists.
After processing data from 170 polling stations in four districts, "Georgian Dream" won 48.5 percent of votes, while the "United National Movement" - 44.8 percent. Ivanishvili got 103,254 votes, "United National Movement" was supported by 66,383 voters, Georgian CEC representative reported preliminary data.
In the coming days the government will change in Adjara. According to the Constitution of Autonomy, after the elections new members of the Supreme Council elect and approve new government and its president.
Parliamentary elections were held in Georgia on Oct.1. Around 14 parties and two political blocs participated in the elections.
Parliamentary elections were held in Georgia on a mixed - list, majority system. Around 150 MPs must be elected - 77 on the lists (a passing barrier of five per cent) and 73 - single-seat constituencies.
Parliament will receive more authority in 2013 after amendments to the constitution take effect resulting in the president's power being reduced.
